How to package your artwork

It can get quite overwhelming when you’re first trying to figure out the best affordable way to protect your artwork. You don’t want to skimp on materials and risk your artwork being damaged but you also don’t want to go all out and increase your cost. Here’s some packaging tips that works for me without busting my bank!

Materials

The combo of a backing board, plastic sleeve, and rigid mailer will protect your prints no matter what. There’s a ton of options out there and I’ve selected a couple of my preferred options.

  • Offers samples

Plastic Sleeve:

Crystal clear bags with flap by Clear Bags:

  • Recyclable

  • PH neutral (prevents discoloration in the backing board & print)

  • Thickness: 1.6mil

  • Eco friendly plant based options available for limited sizes

  • Offers samples

Rigid mailer:

100% recycled rigid self seal mailers by Eco Enclose:

  • Made from 100% recycled content, 90% post-consumer waste

  • Recyclable & biodegradable

  • Thickness: 28 pt. paperboard

  • Low quantity orders available

  • Offers samples

100% recycled rigid heavy duty mailer by Noissue:

  • Made from 100% recycled fiber

  • Recyclable & biodegradable

  • Thickness: 14 pt. paperboard

Examples

For a 10” x 14” print,

Backing board size: 11” x 14”

The backing board is slightly bigger which gives you wiggle room for other print sizes that are a bit wider or smaller.

Plastic sleeve size: 11.4” x 14.3”

The plastic sleeve should be 0.3 - 0.5” larger than the backing board so it fits the print and board nicely.

Rigid mailer size: 11.75” x 14.5”

The rigid mailer should be 0.5-1” larger so it fits the protected print and allows a bit of space if you want to include multiple prints.

Shipping Tips:

With USPS, they will consider any mail that doesn’t bend with light pressure a package so normal package rates will apply when shipping these.
